An ADHD diagnosis includes an evaluation of a child's or teen’s symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity.
What is the traditional process for getting an ADHD diagnosis? There is no blood test to determine ADHD. Symptom checklists, rating scales, and other tests are used to look for patterns of behavior that may indicate ADHD. Information from the person being evaluated, as well as input from family members (parents or spouse) and from teachers, is used when children and teens are being assessed.

What are the DSM 5 criteria for ADHD diagnosis? For a diagnosis of ADHD under DSM-5, a person must display at least six symptoms, whereas those over the age of 17 years must present with five symptoms from both categories (Inattention and Hyperactivity-Impulsivity). In addition, symptoms must persist for at least six months, and also be inconsistent with one’s developmental level (APA, 2013).
